Srixon ZX7 MK 2 Irons vs ZX5 MK 2 Irons Comparison – Which set belongs in your bag?

I’m an avid golfer, an 8ish handicap on my way to a 2 (been a 5.6) and frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015.  

Summary: The Srixon ZX7 MK 2 & ZX5 M2 irons are superb clubs in every way – distance, forgiveness, feel, ball flight, accuracy, and consistency. The ZX5s have larger heads and are a little more forgiving.

In this comparison of the Srixon ZX7 MK2 and ZX5 MK2 irons, I discuss my experience with the clubs, unique features and benefits, and my pick for which iron set I’d buy.

Srixon took all the good stuff about the ZX7s from last year and made it better for the MX2s.

I thought last year’s ZX7s were large compared to other player irons I’d tested. The new MK 2s look perfect to me and pretty much played perfect. (Maybe the P7MBs from Taylormade taught me a lesson about really compact clubheads.)

Like the ZX7s, Srixon took all the good stuff about the ZX5s and improved on it to make the MK2s.

The ZX5 MK2s are “player distance” irons and can be played by low handicaps and better mid handicaps according to Srixon. I concur.  

I had to look at the soles side by side to tell the difference, other than the “ZX7” and “ZX5” markings.

I would own either set. They’re even better than last year.

Testing the ZX7 MK2 & ZX5 MK2 Irons

I had both sets for a couple of weeks and did the bulk of my testing on the course. I also hit them on my mat at home and on the range.

Are there big differences between ZX7 MK2 & ZX5 MK2 Irons?

No, there are no big differences. You can see from the image above, there’s some game improvement stuff going on in the picture on the right (ZX5s)

ZX5s have stronger lofts except for the 4 iron, so you’ll get a little more distance. But playability is identical (for me) and cosmetics are identical. I’ll go a little deeper into the differences below.

Looks

Identical cosmetics. The ZX5s have a thicker topline and sole and more offset. The ZX7s are more compact too.

Winner – Draw (But, I prefer the more compact clubheads of the ZX7s)

Sound/Feel

Identical. Very solid and stable at impact. I think even better than last year’s models. Getting closer to Mizuno Hot Metal territory, but not there yet.

Playability/Ball Flight/Accuracy

Superb for both the ZX7 MK2s and ZX5 MK2s. I’ve not tested any better of this year’s models.

Forgiveness

Like last year, Excellent for both sets. But, the ZX5s are better on mishits. (because they’re designed to be)

Distance

The ZX5s are longer because they’re 1-3 degrees stronger than the ZX7s depending on the club.

Verdict on Srixon ZX7 MK2 irons vs ZX5 MK2 irons 

The ZX7s are beautiful, solid and stable, forgiving, and long.
The ZX5s are beautiful, solid and stable, more forgiving, larger, and longer.

Which set am I buying if I’m coming out of my pocket?

The ZX7 MK2s, but it’s closer this year. 

• I still prefer compact clubheads (within reason) and more standard lofts.

Which set should you get?

My #1 suggestion is to test both sets before you buy. Either at your local golf store or take advantage of Global Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
