This is Golfer Geeks’ 2023 Taylormade P790 Irons Review.

I’m an avid golfer, 8ish handicap on my way to a 2 (been a 5.6), and frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015.

I had the new 2023 P790s for two weeks. I tested them on the range alongside the 2023 Titleist T200 irons and I played two rounds on the course.

Summary: I got everything I expected out of the 2023 Taylormade P790 irons. They’re long and forgiving. They launch the ball quickly and on a high trajectory. They feel solid and a little soft with good contact. And, I’m a fan of the new player-pleasing design.

In this review of the 2023 Taylormade P790 irons, I discuss my experience with the clubs, unique features and benefits, as well as customer reviews and potential alternatives.

Overview & Why Consider Them

The new 2023 P790s are designed for about 12 handicaps on down, just like the 2021 P790s. Worth testing if you’re a little higher handicap.

Taylormade nailed forgiveness with the original P790s. They’ve been working on refining their performance every iteration since the original 2017 versions.

The internal structure of every iron is a little different to optimize launch, accuracy, distance, and forgiveness.

The long irons have the lowest CG for better launch and playability.

The CG is moved progressively higher through the mid and short irons to optimize accuracy, ball flight, and consistency.

Why Consider the P790s

These P790s give you everything you want out of a player-distance iron.

  • Player looks in a beautiful compact clubhead.
  • They’ll let you get away with minor mishits (ask me how I know).
  • They launch the ball quickly on a high trajectory when your contact is good.
  • Premium feel and sound.
  • And they’re consistent for better accuracy and scoring.

My Experience with the new P790 Irons

I got them on the range to start and had a pretty good testing session. My swing was decent, and I got to test out center contact and my usual off-center contact.

But, I judge irons by how they perform on the course. They delivered more than my swing did. My experience on the course was similar to my experience on the range.

I managed a few good swings and got great results. I managed quite a bit more marginal swings and was saved from disaster by the P790s.

Review By Category

2023 Taylormade P790 Irons side view

Looks: (A) Best-looking P790s yet. They’re more refined and less busy. They’re more compact and look great behind the ball at address.

Sound/ Feel: (A) Premium sound and feel. A pleasing “click” sound with solid impact.

Distance: (A) Good repeatable distance for better scoring. Not automatically hot, but you can step on them if need be. Can also take off distance if that’s part of your game.

Forgiveness: (A) Ample forgiveness, and the reason you buy these over the P770s.

Flight / Playability: (A) High and straight is the norm. But you can flight them down and turn them left or right with ease.

Value: (B) ~$200/club – Up there with the most expensive irons in the category.

Who are the 2023 P790 irons for?

2023 Taylormade P790 Irons Toe View

Better ball strikers at around a 10 handicap and any single-digit handicap with strong ball striking.

Low handicap: (Yes) You can certainly play them well, but some low handicap eyes prefer more compact clubheads with thinner toplines and soles and less offset.
Mid handicap: (Maybe) I’d say about a 12-handicap on down could likely play them.
High handicap: (No) You’re better off with the Stealth irons.

Final Verdict

Great performing irons in an eye-pleasing package. I could easily put them in the bag and score well with them.

I think Taylormade kicked off the “player distance” iron category with the P790s. So, they’re likely the standard in the category.

Should you upgrade if you’ve got the 2021 P790 models?
No, I don’t suggest that. The 2023s look more refined and I’m sure there are improvements at the margins, but not enough for most buyers.

My #1 suggestion is to get your hands on them before you buy. Either at your local golf store or take advantage of Global Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
