This is Golfer Geeks’ Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro irons review.

I’m an avid golfer, 8ish handicap on my way to a 2 (been a 5.6), and frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015.

I’ve got 1 round, 1 range session, and multiple sessions on my launch monitor at home with the Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal Pros.

Summary: Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal Pros offer exceptional feel and performance at the bargain price of $137/club. They play identically and look nearly identical to the 923 Hot Metals.

In this review of the Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro irons, I discuss my experience with the clubs, unique features and benefits, as well as customer reviews and potential alternatives.

Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro Irons Overview

Mizuno combined their proprietary Chromoly material with Nickel to form Nickel Chromoly. This allowed them to make the clubface 8% thinner and 35% stronger so they could increase and expand COR over a larger portion of the face.

  • Translation – The sweet spot is bigger than last year’s model. (and it was already big)

Why Consider the JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro irons

Mizuno says they’re suitable for low to mid-handicaps. (Sounds about right) They’ve got all the playability low handicaps want and the game improvement attributes mid handicaps need. (Though, lower single-digit handicap golfers usually prefer smaller, sleeker clubheads)

You can play any shot you want with the Pros and you don’t need perfect contact to do it. Forgiveness is off the charts, as well as launch, carry, and green holding ability.

  • They’ve got distance for days.
  • They’re as forgiving as any I’ve tested.
  • They’re the best feeling irons in the game.

My Experience with the Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro irons

Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro Iron & Golfer Geek Sending One

I first hit them on my Garmin R10 launch monitor at home to get a sense of the numbers. (I knew they’d feel awesome) And, just as I figured, they’re plenty long.

I played a round the next day. I had to take them straight to the course without hitting a shot on the range (it was closed). I somehow hit a good drive down the middle on the opening par 5.

Then, I hit the 6-iron from 185 yards to 30 feet and 2-putted for a birdie. I don’t get to start my rounds with a birdie much, so this was a treat. Contact was solid and soft and ball flight was medium-high trajectory and stopped within a yard or three.

The next hole was a par 3 – 187 yards. Took the same club and flew it 5 yards past the stick. Same buttery soft solid feel and great ball flight.

FYI – I consider the 7-iron in the image above a 6-iron because of the jacked loft. The 7-iron for my Hogan set is 34 degrees.

Review of the Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro Irons

Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro Irons 4-PW

Looks: Solid (A) I love the non-busy minimal design of the 923s. They frame the ball beautifully at address for added confidence. And, the brushed nickel finish helps diminish glare.

Sound/ Feel: (A+++++) Exceptional

Distance: ( A+) Exceptional. They’re not just “hot”, they’re consistently long, even on minor mishits (my specialty). Perfect for scoring.

Forgiveness: (A+) Exceptional.

Flight / Playability: (A+) The ball gets up fast and easy and comes down on a green-holding trajectory. You can play them straight and high or shape and flight them them as your ability permits.

Value: (A+) Exceptional. This much tech, performance, and beauty at $137/club is a gift. (Thank you, Mizuno)

Customer Reviews

Early days, but all the reviews I’ve read are positive.

Who are the JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro irons for?

Low handicap: (Yes) IF, you’re around a 10 handicap OR if you like larger clubheads and want help with forgiveness and distance.
Mid handicap: (Yes) Run, don’t walk if you’re in the market.
High handicap: (Probably) But, the 923 Hot Metal’s larger clubhead will appeal to you more.

Our Verdict on the Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro Irons

These are phenomenal clubs for better mid-handicappers and any low handicap that wants help with distance and forgiveness.

For mid-handicappers, these clubs will age with you beautifully as your game progresses because they are “player” clubs too.

My #1 suggestion is to get your hands on them before you buy. Either at your local golf store or take advantage of Global Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
