This is Golfer Geeks’ Callaway Jaws Raw Chrome Wedge wedge review

I’m a teaching pro & scratch golfer who has played golf for 30 years. I’m always looking to improve my game, even if it’s just a shot or two here and there. I love testing new strategies both on and off the course and studying golf swings to see what actually works.

I’ve got 4 rounds, 3 range sessions, and one session on a Foresight GC3 launch monitor with the Callaway Jaws Raw Chrome Wedge.

Summary: The Jaws Raw Chrome Wedge has some of the most aggressive grooves in the game and a raw face to help improve overall feel and spin. If you want a classic looking wedge with modern technology and Roger Cleveland’s expertise, the Jaws Raw Chrome is it.

In this review of the Callaway Jaws Raw Chrome wedge, I discuss my experience with the club, unique features, and benefits, as well as launch monitor data, customer reviews and potential alternatives.

Callaway Jaws Raw Chrome Wedge Overview

Callaway claimed they took spin and control to new levels in the Callaway Jaws Raw Chrome wedges. By using new sharper, and improved grooves, promoting their “one hop and stop” trajectory, and combining it all with a raw face, what happens on the green is no longer up to the wedge; it’s up to you.

  • Translation- Callaway pulled out all the stops to get your golf ball to stop! (See what I did there)

Why Consider the Callaway Jaws Raw Chrome Wedges

Your wedges are supposed to put you in control of what happens around the greens. (True story)

Callaway set out to create a wedge that has a mix of versatility and precision that can work for upper mid handicaps to professional players.

With Tungsten in the clubhead for the first time on a Callaway Wedge, the feel and control have changed from the MD5 series (it’s a lot better).

  • Your ball stops where you tell it to.
  • They are clean-looking and confidence-inspiring at the same time.
  • The raw face makes them feel a little softer and may contribute to their impressive spin numbers. (a debate for another day)

My Experience with the Callaway Jaws Raw Chrome Wedge

I’m lucky to have access to a Foresight GC3 launch monitor to get some accurate spin rates on all the wedges I test. (there’s a sticker on the face of the wedge to protect from rusting during shipment)

After ripping the sticker off, I was ready to get some data on this wedge and then take it out to the course.

The first thing I looked at was distance. I don’t care so much about total distance as I do distance control, but I still want to be able to fill the gaps in my bag.

With an average of 78 mph swing speed with the steel stock wedge flex shaft, I was getting distances in the 90-yard range. This might be a few yards shorter than other models, but it checked that box, and I moved on to spin.

Spin is where this wedge shines. With full swings again in the 77 to 79 mph range, I saw spin rates ranging from 9200 rpm to 9900 rpm. That’s a lot of spin.

I was impressed, but I really had to test the spin on those half swing shots.

Launch monitors tend to struggle with spin rates on the shorter shots, so I tried to take some swings in the 50-60 mph range where I could see how the spin rates held up.

The spin rates here were still in the 7400 to 7700 range. Again, really impressive on a half a swing shot.

I also noticed when testing the Jaws Raw against other wedges that the full swing spin rates of the Jaws Raw were the most consistent overall. Every once in a while, you will see a wedge that puts out a rate like 6800, then 7800, then 8800, then 6500.

User error is always a concern, but sometimes it is the technology; with the Jaws Raw Chrome, I didn’t run into that at all.

Out on the course, the thing that stands out the most is this “hop and stop” technology. You can hit a shot and watch it try to grab; it will jump in the air and then stop within a few inches.

If I had some more time to practice with these wedges, I feel like I could get really accurate.

Review of the Callaway Jaws Raw Chrome Wedges

Looks: Solid (A) I love the clean look, and although I was worried about the chrome finish, it’s an anti-glare chrome finish that won’t distract you at all.

Sound/ Feel: (A+) Exceptional, exactly what I look for in a wedge for playability, precision, and control. It’s not overly soft, but certainly no click from the golf ball at impact.

Distance and Distance Control: ( A) Great. Not the longest wedge on the market, but the combination of feel and technology helps you control the distances.

Forgiveness: (B+) You do need to hit this on the center of the clubface if you want to get the consistency that I talked about.

Spin: (A++) “Hop and Stop” technology helps you stop the ball exactly where you want it to sit. The Callaway Jaws Raw Chrome wedges spin on half and full-swing shots.

Consistency: (A+) One of the most consistent wedges in the game from a speed and distance standpoint.

Value: (A) Not the cheapest wedge on the market, but with all of the grind and loft combinations, you can find something specifically fit for your game.

Customer Reviews

The customer reviews I read were overwhelmingly positive. Of course, there were a few complaints. Can you guess what they were about? Yes, the raw face.

I’ll admit it took me a few to get used to the raw face. However, I had this old Vokey wedge from when I was a kid that had what they called the oil can finish, and the whole thing looked like this.

Maybe I’m used to it, maybe I like it and it skews my opinion, but if you go back just to the performance of the wedge, it’s worth getting used to the raw face for what it can do.

Some comments I saw were:

  • “Going back to my old wedges that won’t rust.”
  • “Drop and stop technology is incredible.”
  • “These have all the spin you will ever need.”
  • “Can be a little rough on the cover of a softer ball.”
  • “Not the longest distance, but distance control is where it needs to be.”

Who are the Callaway Jaws Raw Chrome for?

Low handicap: (Yes) If you want control and precision and need it to break 70, these wedges have you covered.

Mid handicap: (Yes) The Callaway Jaws Raw Chrome could be what takes you from guessing where your short game shots are going to knowing where they will end up.

High handicap: (Maybe) If you commit to working on your short game, you can handle these; if not, go with something more forgiving like the Callaway CB Wedge.

Our Verdict on the Callaway Jaws Raw Chrome Wedges Review

There were two things that scared me about the Callaway Jaws Raw Chrome wedges.

One…the raw
Second…the chrome.

No longer, though. After hours of testing, I’m thinking of putting the 56-degree in my bag.

  • The spin rates are incredible, and when you have them in play for a few rounds on the course, you really learn what it takes to be the one in control.

Anyone with a 15 and under handicap will benefit.
Over a 15 handicap? Be prepared to put in the work.

Our #1 suggestion is to get your hands on it before you buy. Either at your local golf store or take advantage of Global Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
