TaylorMade MG4 Wedge Overview
The
The milled grind technology has not changed; the club’s sole is still designed to cut through turf with ease. One of the new features in this MG4 is a slightly rounded look with a larger profile. It still is very player-friendly when it comes to both looks and sound.
The raw finish designed to improve overall spin rates over time is a great addition. The club turns in just a few hours, so be prepared for that. On the face of the wedge, you will notice laser-etched scoring lines that help to increase overall spin rates.
Spin Tread technology creates something that looks like microscopic gutters on the face of the club. Water works its way out and away from the center of the face, so you get a clean interaction between the golf ball and the club head.
Translation: The MG4 has everything you need for success from 100 yards and in. However, when it comes to those awkward shots in the 40-80-yard range, the MG4 could be the best in the game.

My Experience with the TaylorMade MG4 Wedge
As always, I like to start with the Foresight GC3 launch monitor and see what kind of numbers the
Right away, the MG4 started putting up full-swing spin rates of over 10,000 rpm. If you have read my other wedge reviews, this certainly puts it up there with some of the highest-spinning wedges on the market right now.
I noticed that the total distance was about 3-4 yards shorter than other wedges I’ve tested, but nothing to keep me from using it.
However, where the MG4 impressed me the most was when I went to the ¾ and ½ swing shots and still saw spin rates over 8000 at times. Some other wedges struggle to get that type of spin on full swing shots.
In fact, I was playing a closest-to-the-pin contest with my 9-year-old son when I tested this wedge, and he said, “That’s crazy, that thing backs up even in the longer grass.”
Pretty crazy.

A lot of time, money, and effort went into the way the MG4 is designed, making it feel as though it’s been in your bag for a lifetime, not a few hours. If you told me tomorrow I had to replace all my wedges with MG4, I would do it.
Review of the TaylorMade MG4 Wedges
Looks: (A+) An improvement from the MG4, more rounded and very clean looking.
Sound/ Feel: (A) Great sound and feel, exactly what a better player would expect, soft enough on short shots.
Distance and Distance Control: (A+) Distance control is what I love the most about the MG4; you can do what you want with this club.
Forgiveness: (B) Not all that forgiving, and you could lose a few yards as it’s not the best for total distance.
Spin: (A+) High spin rates all around; greenside spin, even out of the rough, was not bad.
Consistency: (A) Very consistent spin performance, but also consistent feel.
Value: (A) The MG4 is a new release; it will be expensive for a bit, but you get your money’s worth.

The MG4 is new, and golfers seem to love the performance and feel so far. I also saw one negative about the ferrule on the club not being as premium in the MG4; it’s not something I noticed on the club I tried.

Should you upgrade to the MG4 if you own the MG3?
No, I don’t recommend that. Keep your MG3 another year and wait for the MG5.
Yes, if money is no object.
Our #1 suggestion is to get your hands on it before you buy. Either at your local golf store or use Global Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
