This is Golfer Geeks’ Taylormade P790 Irons Review.

I’m an avid golfer, 8ish handicap on my way to a 2 (been a 5.6), and frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015.

I’ve had the P790s for a little over a week. I’ve played one round with them, hit the range for a practice session on my launch monitor, and done a TON of work on my mat and practice net at home – working on my game.

Note – You can read about the new 2023 P790s I recently tested.

Summary: The P790s are long and forgiving with above-average sound and feel. They want to go high and straight, but you can play shots if that’s part of your game. I found their distance controllable and not unexpectedly hot from one shot to the next. I’d put them in the bag.

In this review of the Taylormade P790 irons, I discuss my experience with the clubs, unique features and benefits, as well as customer reviews and potential alternatives.

Taylormade P790 Irons Overview & Why Consider Them

The P790s are designed for 12 handicaps on down. (I suspect you can be a little higher handicap and play them, but always test).

They’re hollow-body speed foam injected which allows Taylormade to redistribute weight lower and deeper in the clubhead to max out MOI and launch. This means more distance over a larger portion of the clubface.

Why Consider the P790 Irons

They deliver on the course, where it counts. They’re as solid as any iron I’ve tested and have all the distance help you need without needing pure contact.

They are player-looking enough for low handicaps eyes, but have game-improvement qualities to pick you up when you aren’t swinging your best.

My Experience with the Taylormade P790 Irons

I hit the course for my first test with the P790s. They delivered immediately and consistently throughout the round.

I threw a number of darts with a nice tight draw – my preferred ball flight. I loved their feel too. I even found the long irons playable – which isn’t always the case for me.

Also, they’re flat-out gorgeous. I would happily put them in play tomorrow.

Taylormade P790 Irons Profile

Looks: (A) Love the looks with the mixture of brush metal finish and shiny accents. Heads look forgiving but not bulky or clunky. Set up nicely behind the ball at address for added confidence.

Sound/ Feel: (A) Great sound and feel. A pleasing “click” sound with solid impact.

Distance: (A) Good repeatable distance for better scoring. Not automatically hot, but you can step on them if need be. Can also take off distance if that’s part of your game.

Forgiveness: (A) Ample forgiveness, and the reason you buy these over the P770s.

Flight / Playability: (A) High and straight is the norm. But, you can flight them down and turn them left or right with ease.

Value: (B) ~$185/club (as of today) – About what you expect to pay for player performance irons.

Customer Reviews

Average rating of 4.8 with 1448 reviews. 96.75% would recommend the P-770s.

Who are the P790 irons for?

Better ball strikers at around a 10 handicap and any single-digit handicap with strong ball striking.

Low handicap: (Yes) You can certainly play them and play them well, but some low handicap eyes prefer more compact clubheads with thinner toplines and soles, and less offset.
Mid handicap: (Maybe) I’d say about a 12-handicap on down could likely play them.
High handicap: (No) You’re better off with the Stealth irons.

Our Verdict on Taylormade P790 Irons

Great performing irons in an eye-pleasing package. I could easily put them in the bag and score well with them.

Heads may be too bulky for the more discerning low handicapper’s eyes. But, you can play all the shots.

My #1 suggestion is to get your hands on them before you buy. Either at your local golf store or take advantage of Global Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
