Overview
A few of the improvements for the 2023 P-7MC irons.
- Compact Grain forging under 2000lbs of pressure (twice industry standard) for a tighter grain structure and better feel
- Tour-inspired compact clubhead with thin topline and sole with minimal offset and perimeter weighting for a touch of forgiveness (I can attest it’s only a touch)
- Machine-milled face and grooves for more precision and consitency.
Why Consider them
Disclaimer: You have to consistently hit the ball dead-nuts solid or veery close to it to appreciate their performance.
If this describes you and you like the way they look, you’ll love the way they play.
- They’re built for and deliver precision and solid feel when well-struck.
- You can play any trajectory and any shape you’ve got in your game.
Set Tested: 4-PW – Right Hand
Shaft: FST KBS Tour Steel Stiff Flex

My Experience with the Taylormade P-770 Irons
My main work with the Taylormade P7MCs came on the course. (Still figuring out how to best use the range at my new course.)
I spent a little time on the golf practice mat at my house and a little less than that at my new range.
I hit them well at home and felt fairly confident for my round with them.
Here’s my experience with them on the course:
I managed to hit a good-enough drive on the 1st hole. I then tugged an 8-iron pin high left from the middle of the first fairway. I didn’t flush it, but I hit it good enough for me and got the right distance.
The next couple of irons shots came on the 2nd hole – a par 5. I layed up with a 4-iron – hit reasonably well. Then I flushed an 8-iron from about 153 yards into about a 1-club wind onto the green.
My next two iron shots were another 4-iron – hit mostly solid and pulled just short of the green from about 235 yards out on the par-5 6th – and a flushed 7-iron from 175 out onto the green on the following par 4. (with a little wind behind me)
This continued through my round. But, I knew I had to swing disciplined and focus on contact. The P7MCs weren’t going to cover for marginal swings.
Review
Looks: (B+) Good-looking irons, not great-looking irons. I love the compact clubheads. Topline and sole are thin and offset is reduced – which top players appreciate.
Sound/ Feel: (A) Good sound and feel with solid impact.
Distance: (B) They do what they’re supposed to do. Land pin-high and be consistent. They’re not short, but you get no help with distance.
Forgiveness: (B) Again, these are elite player irons and are as forgiving as they’re supposed to be. I was allowed small misses without severe punishment.
Flight / Playability: (A) THIS is why you buy these irons. You can play any shot you have on any trajectory you have.
Value: (A) ~$185/club (as of today) – On par with better-player clubs from other manufacturers.

Who are the P-7MC irons for?
They’re meant for elite ball strikers. You have to wear out the sweet spot to get all the performance. They do allow for slight mishits. But, you’ll lose distance.
Low handicap: (Yes) Elite low handicaps & PGA pros will love these.
Mid handicap: (NoNoNo) Noooooooooooo
High handicap: (See “Mid handicap”)

Our Verdict
Excellent player irons for excellent ball strikers and pros. They do exactly what they’re designed to do.
They are juust forgiving enough to get around with occasional mishits for your regular low handicaps.
Would I buy them? No, they wouldn’t be my first choice. They require more consistency than I have…for now.
My #1 suggestion is to get your hands on them before you buy. Either at your local golf store or take advantage of Global Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
