Thanks for checking out my Titleist 620 CB irons vs MB irons comparison.
I’m an avid golfer, a 9.2 handicap on my way to a 2 (been a 5.6) and frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015.
I had the MBs and CBs out on the range and on the course to test them over the course of about 2 weeks for each.
Summary: The Titleist 620 CB irons give you all the playability and performance of the 620 MBs, but are more forgiving. Thus, available to more low handicappers.
In this comparison of the Titleist 620 CB and MB irons, I discuss my experience with each driver, unique features and benefits, and my pick for which driver I’d buy.
Titleist 620 CB Irons
The 620 CB irons are pure player-forged cavity back irons. Perfectly compact heads. Topline and sole are just thin enough. Minimal offset and minimal, yet elegant, design. Online images do not do them justice (including the ones on this page). They’re surprisingly gorgeous.
They were a joy to hit and I seriously considered keeping them.
Features & Benefits
This is a classic cavity back from Titleist, so there aren’t many bells and whistles.
- They’ve reduced offset, which is big in the low handicap golfing world
- They’ve made the topline thinner than prior models. It is thin, but not scary at all to my eyes
- They’ve added tungsten weighting to the 3 and 4-iron for better balance
- They’ve refined the sole for better turf interaction
Titleist 620 MB Irons
Another classic player iron from Titleist. The 620 MBs are forged blades in the truest sense. Nothing flashy. Just the basics done as well as can be done.
Features & Benefits
Look up “blades” in your golf dictionary and you’ll find these. So, this will be short.
- Thin topline (cause that’s how players like them)
- Refined sole (for best turf interaction and better performance
- Compact clubhead (
Testing the 620 CB & MB Irons
620 CBs
- 2 Range sessions: I hit a couple buckets each session and did some driver testing while I was at it.
- 1 Round of golf: I couldn’t wait for this one and I wasn’t disappointed. I could/would put these in play today.
620 MBs
- 1 Range Session: I hit two buckets for this session and threw in some driver testing. My swing is a little off right now, about a B-, but I still got some good testing in. Likely going to get one more range session in.
- 2 Rounds of Golf: Family’s out of town so had some extra time to hit the links over the weekend. (Plus, I wanted to hit them solid for at least one round – no luck)
My impressions of the 620 CB irons & 620 MB irons.
I loved the CBs from the get-go. They look and feel awesome and my swing was humming along pretty well when I tested them. I played my normal high draw most of the time but was able to flight the ball down with ease.
Slight mishits didn’t feel harsh and weren’t punished excessively. In fact, bigger mishits weren’t harsh either. I just didn’t get as much distance.
I would put the 620 CBs in play TODAY. I did not like sending them back.
The MBs are great-looking blades and felt great too. Just not as good to me as the CBs. Mostly because my swing was off and I rarely caught the ball square. And, you can’t have an “off” swing with blades.
Still, I was around or on the green for the most part during my rounds. My putting is the only thing that kept me from the mid-70s in my rounds with them.
Looks
I know blades usually look better, but not in this case. At least, to me.
Both heads are compact – which is part of looks in my book. The CBs have a slightly thicker topline and sole and look a touch more forgiving. I love the brushed metal finish, minimal design, and the head shape. They look ridiculously good behind the ball at address.
The MBs look like classic blades and have about as minimal a design as you’re gonna find. A liiitle too minimal for me. Don’t get me wrong, they look good…just not great. Two of my golf buddies went gaga over the MBs. So, that’s 2 against 1 for looks.
I’m going with my pick
Winner – CBs
Sound/Feel
This is neck and neck. The deciding factor is I was striping the ball when I tested the CBs. They felt soft, controllable, and solid at impact. Near perfect, if not perfect.
I connected on a few crisp shots with the MBs and they felt good, but not as good to me.
Winner – CBs
Playability/Ball Flight
I hit tight high draws with my good contact with the CBs and was able to flight them down at will. I was just a bit off when testing the MBs, but managed to hit my standard draw on or somewhere around the green often. My ball flight wasn’t as powerful as with the CBs.
The MBs are a bit more exacting, as you would expect.
Winner – CBs
Forgiveness
I got away with a lot with both clubs, in my opinion. You’re still going to be around your target if your swing is just a touch off.
That said, the CBs are made to be and are more forgiving. But, don’t go to sleep on the MBs. They weren’t as harsh on mishits as you’d think they’d be.
Winner – CBs
Distance
I was consistently a half club to a club longer than my irons with the CB irons. A very pleasant surprise. Especially since the lofts are the same or even weaker in some cases than my Hogan irons.
I found the MBs to be pretty much the same length. I just had to have better contact to get it.
Winner – Draw
Conclusion of Titleist 620 CB irons vs MB irons
I prefer the CBs because they’re more forgiving and I’m in Love with their looks.
That being said, the MBs are exactly what they’re supposed to be. Pure Player Irons.
My #1 suggestion is to test both clubs before you buy. Either at your local golf store or take advantage of Global Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
